Bible Truth FAQs

WHICH KIND OF MUSIC IS ACCEPTABLE

The religious world today generally accepts the precept that music is required in worship. Without regard to God's wishes in this matter of music, many utilize various kinds and combinations of music, satisfying their own desires under presumptuous worship to God.

What is the Bible authority for music in worship? Since Old Testament law was taken out of the way and nailed to the cross in the death of Christ (Col. 2:14), the answer is necessarily found in the inspired New Testament scriptures. Strange as it may seem to most people, there is absolutely no authority for the mechanical instrument. All references to music in worship pertain to vocal music.

The term "music" is generic; that is, it includes everything that is of a musical nature. Vocal music is specific and excludes all other forms of music. When a person desires to worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24), he will refrain from offering up "strange music" which the Lord has not commanded. (Read Leviticus 10:1-3).
