WHAT YOU MUST OBEY
In writing to the church at Thessalonica, Paul made it known that all who do not obey the gospel of Christ are doomed to everlasting destruction (II Thess. 1:7-10). It is readily apparent that one must obey the gospel of Christ, but what is the gospel, and how can men obey it?
In I Cor. 15:1-4 Paul informed the Corinthians that the gospel consists of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. But these are facts, and we cannot obey facts. We believe facts and obey commands. In Paul's letter to the Romans he said (Rom. 6:17), "...ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine delivered unto you..."
Men can obey a form of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. When we repent of sins, we die to sin and are then dead to sin. We are then buried in baptism for the remission of sins, and from the baptismal grave in water we are resurrected (raised) to walk in newness of life. This is exactly what Paul wrote in Rom. 6:1-18. This is the gospel men must obey.
