Bible Truth FAQs

WHAT TRUE WORSHIP IS

When Jesus was conversing with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well (John 4), he said unto her, "...But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (verses 23-24). Notice: true worshippers must worship him in spirit and in truth. God seeks for true worshippers.

"In spirit" has to do with the worshipper's spirit, not God's. It means that everything done in worship must be done with all the heart, soul, and attentive attitude the worshipper can muster. "In truth" simply means according to divine instruction. Jesus stated in his prayer recorded in John 11, "Thy word is truth" (verse 11). Worship with our every fiber will not avail if our worship 1s patterned after man's wishes instead of God's word. Neither will our worship in truth avail if we half-heartedly go through the motions. It takes both spirit and truth. May we learn to lay aside our own wills and seek to please God in our worship.
