THE EXAMPLE OF LOT'S WIFE
(Taking God's Word Lightly)

In Gen. 18 and 19 we learn of the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their great wickedness. Abraham pleaded with God to spare these cities if ten righteous persons could be found therein, but there were not that many to be found.

Only Lot, his wife, and two daughters were delivered from the destruction of brimstone and fire which rained down upon these two cities {Gen. 19:15, 24; II Pet. 2:6-7). The instructions given through the two angels were to escape for their lives, do not look behind themselves, do not stay in the plain, but escape to the mountain. While they were escaping the destruction, Lot's wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt. What a horrible consequence for taking God's word lightly!

In these times there are many who do not take God's word seriously. Those in religious leadership roles do not accept the Bible as the inspired word, while a great many others reject portions of it that are offensive to them. Lot's wife serves as a great lesson that God's commands are not to be taken lightly. The admonition is explicitly given in Luke 17:32: "Remember Lot's wife."
