Bible Truth FAQs

IS FORGIVENESS OBTAINABLE?

There is a passage that may bring fear and despair upon anyone who willfully commits a sin. Willful commission means violation of one's own conscience, knowing the act is sinful but doing it anyway. The scripture is Heb. 10:26: "For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins."

Careless reading causes many to conclude that they cannot get forgiveness for willful sin. Notice, however the passage does not say there is no more FORGIVENESS of sin, but no more SACRIFICE for sin. This is because in this dispensation of time Christ is our only sacrifice for sin. He will not be sacrificed again, because he gave himself as "one sacrifice for sins for ever" (Heb. 10:12).

Certainly, forgiveness is available to every person for any sin (I John 1:7-9), but we must understand and comply with God's laws of pardon. A person's relationship with God determines which laws apply. Call if you need assistance.
