ABOUT SPEAKING IN TONGUES

There are many today who claim to have the ability to speak in tongues and to possess other miraculous gifts (See I Cor. 12:4-11). As to the use of tongues there is much confusion and disorder, which results from loud shouting and convulsion-like displays, much babbling of incoherent sounds, and all accomplishing nothing.

In Acts 2:4 the record says that the apostles were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. The occasion was Pentecost and men from every nation were present in Jerusalem (verse 5). When they heard the apostles speaking in tongues, they heard them in their own languages (verse 6). Is this what we hear from today's pretenders?

As to speaking in an unknown tongue, those claiming such today seemingly do not know the rules laid down by inspiration (I Cor. 14:23-29). If they are ignorant of the divine restrictions, why place any credence at all in them? The truth is that miraculous gifts were imparted only through the laying on of the apostles' hands, and the apostles have all been dead for some 1,900 years.
